Nowhere Ranch by Heidi Cullinan

Nowhere Ranch - Heidi Cullinan

Read from December 09 to 10, 2013

Well, here's the book everyone loves but me.

And I'm sorry and I feel bad, but it's true.

While reading Nowhere Ranch I was like:

The story seemed just... shallow. The plot - I've read it before. The characters - predictable. The sex scenes - I can't find a word. It was just not for me. I've starded to read this with some great, great expectations, but something went wrong. Maybe it was just the contrast after reading Training Season or Don't.... Maybe it's the sign from above that I need to rest a bit and stop reading the MM romance for some time. (But I don't want to, not really.)

Giving this book 1 star would be unfair. I've read worse after all.

Training Season by Leta Blake

Training Season - Leta Blake

Well, damn. I can't write anything coherent enough to make my admiration simple and clear.

I've read two parts of Training Season at night and I had to put it back and go to sleep. Yet I couldn't stop thinking about the characters, about their intense relationship and the very good plot, so I went to work moody since I haven't had my sleep up and frustrated since I couldn't get back to read. Yes, it was just damn peachy.

But it was worth it.

This book it's an epitomy of perfection.

 5 shining bright North Stars.

Bone Rider by J. Fally

Bone Rider - J. Fally

Recommended to Yuki by: Trix

Read from December 04 to 08, 2013

So a cowboy, an alien and three hit men walk into a bar...

At first I was like:

I said to myself: Let's get over with it, I will read it quickly, give it two stars and say to Trix that's not for me. Aliens? Serously?

Well. Now I can say one simple word:

description

The story was perfect. The characters were well developed and I especially loved the southern hints.

So if you don't know if it's for you, or if aliens is your thing - damn sure it is.

Highly recommended.

Don't... by Jack L. Pyke

Don't... - Jack L. Pyke

I really don't know what to write, what to think.

I've finished this book about an hour ago and I can't stop thinking about what the hell did I just read, about why the hell the characters and the situations are still in my head, itching and coming back while I do some random things.

Don't... is brilliant, midfucking piece of art. And I'm really not into BDSM theme, not at all. Yet here I loved it.

Can I give it 6 stars? Please.

After Midnight by Santino Hassell

After Midnight - Santino Hassell

Lets start with this: After Midnight is dedicated to me, me, me!

To me and my friends - To readers of "In the Company of Shadows" for being encouraging, enthusiastic and for looking past the flaws. Hell, yeah.

And I was enthusiastic while reading this spin-off too. I prepared myself for one hell of a ride, even it was way too short for me - Sonny and Ais spoiled me with four slowly paced installments of ICOS.

And my enthusiasm brought me straight to love.

Highly recommended.

My government is detached from reality - let's kill the Polish readership!

You've got to be shitting me...

Not so long ago our government decided that books should be taxed (they were pretty much tax-free, which was supposed to keep the prices down and encourage people to read). Aaaaand it's gone. Let's slam a new, pretty 23% tax on top of the price! BAM!

But are we done yet? Noooo. There's so much more to fuck up! I know what we can do - let's pass a law that forces all book-stores to sell publications at the price set by publisher for a period lasting up to 1,5 year. No discounts, no promotions, no nothing. Perfect!

They're actually talking about passing that law! They say:

"The goal is to raise readership levels throughout the country by making books available everywhere and presenting a more varied offer"

and

"This law will raise the number of bookstores, currently small local shops are loosing a  fight to big companies (...) Competing won't any longer be about prices"

Just fuck you all. Really? Really. People go to big chains because they're big. Even with equal prices, convenience and habit would prevail. All that new law will accomplish is a decrease in sales.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how that is supposed to encourage anyone to read. It may be more fair to  bookstores, but not to the readers. Prices are already very high. Stop it. It's already cheaper for me to buy a paperback from amazon and freaking have it shipped (to a different continent. Over an Ocean.) than to go to a local store.

Rescue Me by Scarlett Blackwell

Rescue Me - Scarlet Blackwell

Read from October 21 to 23, 2013

I would have given this book 5 shiny stars. Seriously, I would have done it.

But somewhere in the process of reading I just got tired of the constant struggling of the main characters.

I get it. It's hard to come to terms with homosexuality.

But it was a little too much.

Recommended, anyway.

Unspoken (Woodlands #2)

Unspoken - Jen Frederick

Read on October 21, 2013

The second installment of Woodlands was FAR better than the first one.

In contrast to Undeclared the plot was more probable.

The main characters are easy to like, to love even - Bo is just great.

I really, really liked it.

Undeclared (Woodlands #1) by Jen Frederick

Undeclared (Woodlands #1) - Jen Frederick

Read from October 20 to 21, 2013

The plot idea was a little bit farfetched. Seriously? The main characters wrote a letters (meaningless and short) for four years. Then Noah decided he's too fucked up and broke the connection. Grace was heartbroken and devastated, since she pictured her Marine as THE ONE. After two years he wants to win her back.

Besides - it's a good book.

ARC Review: No Flag by Liz Borino

No Flag - Liz Borino

Read from October 14 to 15, 2013

No flag means "Come back home safe and sound. I refuse to receive the folded flag on your funeral". It means "I will take care of myself, I will be careful, I won't be reckless".

One of the main characters is a soldier. Military and gay - is there a better mix of guilty pleasure for a sinful reader?

The book of Liz Borino surprised me on many levels. Enough to say that I forgot to check my percentage progress of reading and there was so many moments I was quite sure that the book was at its end. But no. The plot was maybe a little bit predictable, but good.

I was not very fond of Domestic Discipline relationship of the main characters - it's not my cup of tea after all, and I had a moments when I was like "I would strangle him" or "Fold your goddamned clothes yourself" (the dominant had an OCD). But it was a good story, I've read it with pleasure. I didn't love it, but I liked it enough to give it 3.5 stars rounded down.

when you receive an ARC of a book and you literally have no opinion, except formatting sucks... and conversations are hard to follow.

ARC Review: Bad Idea by Damon Suede

Bad Idea - Damon Suede

My copy was an ARC I received from the publisher for an honest review.

Bad Idea is brilliant, witty and very, very good. The main characters are likeable and real. The plot is very interesting. The writing is excellent – how I loved to read a real, smart dialogues, with inside jokes! It’s all we, the readers, want, and we got it, nicely wrapped in fast paced, rollercoaster-style story. The book is the work of art, and I mean it.

It reminded me of Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy somehow. And I loved Chasing Amy.

And now I love Bad Idea.

Father and Son by Larry Brown

Father and Son - Larry Brown

I know it's very different setting, but I heard it all the time while reading Father and Son:

I was driving up from Tampa

When the radiator burst

I was three sheets to the wind

A civilian saw me first

And then there was the cop

And then the children standing on the corner

Your love is like a cyclone in a swamp

And the weather's getting warmer

I was getting out of jail

Heading to the Greyhound

You said you'd hop on one yourself

And meet me on the way down

I was shaking way too hard to think

Dead on my feet about to drop

Went and got the case of vodka from a car

And walked the two miles to the bus stop

Got on the bus half drunk again

The driver glared at me

Met up with you in Inglis

Thumbed a ride to Cedar Key

If we never make it back to California

I want you to know I love you

But my love is like a dark cloud full of rain

That's always right there up above you

The blurb says that it all about evil eating up man's soul. There's no good and there's no evil. The book of Larry Brown is beautiful and terrifying story. It's rough and heartwrenching at the same time, full of violence and yet I couldn't stop reading.

Highly recommended.

Help needed!

I'm desperately looking for some book described here as "The Hunger Games" M/M style or something like this.

Anyone?

Two Minutes to Midnight - Devil at the Crossroads by Cornelia Grey

Devil at the Crossroads - Cornelia Grey

TWO MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT

Devil at the Crossroads. I didn't even know that it was a MM book at first. The title itself was enough. Southern gothic as its finest!

Then I realised it's MM "romance". No need to explain my interest.

Cornelia Grey reinterpretated, even demithyfied the classic faustic myth of making the pact with the Devil. The main character is so similar to (in)famous Robert Johnson (there's a legend that he went to Dockery Plantation crossroads, the devil himself tuned his guitar and he sang of his dealings with the Devil untill he was six feet deep - yes, there were hellhounds on his trail, of course) - he's the musican, he wants to play blues, he wants the major changes. He gets it, he makes a deal sealed with the kiss (that's the Supernatural influence, I bet). Expect, contrary to the legends, the kiss is hot, passionate and erotic, since the Devil appears to be the very, very handsome rockman with the red eyes.

Like I said, Devil at the Crossroads is the deconstrucionist (I dare not to say hermaneutical) story. And I liked the twists. I like the split narrative, the naturalistic descriptions - who ever dare to say that the spit of his character gathered at the corner of his mouth?

That's right.
